How to use hot melt adhesive film for clothing labels

Feb 09, 2025

1. Material matching

Be sure to choose the appropriate hot melt adhesive film according to the fabric of the clothing and the material of the label. For cotton fabrics, EVA hot melt adhesive film can be used, which can combine well with cotton and has a low cost. For high-end or special fabrics such as silk and leather, TPU hot melt adhesive film is more suitable because of its good flexibility and will not damage the original texture of the fabric. If the film does not match the fabric, degumming is very likely to occur.

2. Temperature control

Whether using a heat press or an iron, precise temperature control is crucial. Hot melt adhesive films of different materials have different melting points. Taking EVA hot melt adhesive film as an example, the melting point is usually 80-120℃, while the melting point of TPU hot melt adhesive film is about 100-180℃. If the temperature is too high, the film will carbonize, turn yellow, and even damage the fabric; if the temperature is too low, the film will not be fully melted, resulting in poor adhesion. Before operation, be sure to carefully read the product manual of the film and set the appropriate temperature.

3. Pressure and time

The applied pressure needs to be evenly distributed, otherwise the label will not be pasted evenly, with some parts sticking firmly and others loose. When using a heat press, set the appropriate pressure parameters according to the characteristics of the film and fabric. When using an iron, move it on the label with a steady force. In addition, the heat pressing time cannot be ignored. If the time is too short, the film cannot fully exert its stickiness; if the time is too long, it may have an adverse effect on the fabric. Generally speaking, it is more appropriate to control the heat pressing time within 5-15 seconds, and the specific time needs to be determined through experiments.

4. Operation details

Before pasting, make sure the surface of the garment and label is clean, dry, and free of dust, oil or moisture. When placing the hot melt adhesive film, ensure that it fits tightly against the label without bubbles or wrinkles. After the hot pressing is completed, do not rush to move or touch the label. Wait for it to cool and solidify naturally, otherwise it will easily cause the label to shift or not stick firmly. At the same time, when using a hot melt adhesive film for the first time, it is recommended to test it on a small piece of fabric first, and after confirming the effect is good, then proceed with large-scale operation.
